Cemar Lavoir de Laines
‘Cemar Lavoir de Laines is an abandoned wool-washing factory in Zulte, Belgium. The old industrial site tells the story of a family that helped shape the town for many years. Today, the machines stand still, covered in dust, while the building slowly falls apart.
The factory belonged to Cecil Martens, and that is why it was called Cemar. “Lavoir de Laines” means “wool-washing factory” in French. It was one of several businesses owned by the powerful Martens family in Zulte. During the 1880s, trade and industry grew fast in the town. The Martens family played a big role in this. Besides the wool factory, they also owned a spinning mill, a knitwear workshop, tanneries, and even a brewery.
The wool-washing factory had an important job. Freshly shorn wool arrived here first. Workers cleaned and washed the raw wool before sending it to clothing factories. This was the first step before the wool became clothes.
The Abandonment
Cemar Lavoir de Laines closed its doors in 2004. The company could no longer compete with countries where labor was much cheaper, especially China. As a result, around 40 workers lost their jobs. The factory had no new purpose after that. The doors closed, and the machines were left behind.
Since then, time has slowly taken over. Dust covers the floors, and rust spreads across the old metal machines. What was once a busy workplace became silent.
Exploring Cemar Lavoir de Laines
Inside the building, the original wool-washing machines were still there. They stand exactly where the workers left them. Large pipes, metal tanks, and old industrial tools fill the dark rooms. Everything feels frozen in time. The silence is heavy, and every corner shows signs of decay. Broken windows let in rain and wind, and nature slowly enters the factory.
Next to the factory stands the abandoned house of the managing director. This building also sits empty, adding even more history to the site.
What You See Today
After standing empty for twenty years, the site finally changed forever. In 2024, the last buildings of Cemar Lavoir de Laines were demolished. The old factory disappeared to make space for new housing. Only the director’s house is still there today.
This place shows an important part of Zulte’s industrial past. It tells the story of local business, hard work, and the slow decline of old industry. Cemar Lavoir de Laines is a strong reminder that even the busiest places can become silent. Time changes everything.
