An abandoned village in

São Gabriel is an abandoned village near Canha in Portugal. It was built for the workers of an important shortwave radio station. Today, the empty houses, school, and church show what happened when the radio station stopped its work.

The village of São Gabriel was built in 1951. Architect Francisco dos Santos designed the small community for the workers of the Centro Emissor de Ondas Curtas. The site was part of the old Emissora Nacional radio network.

The radio station opened in 1954. It sent Portuguese radio programs to other parts of the world. Many workers lived in São Gabriel with their families. The village had everything needed for daily life. There were 22 houses, a primary school, a canteen, and a church. There was also a playground and other places for sport and free time.

The location was quite isolated. There was no public transport, so the workers needed these services close to their homes. São Gabriel was more than a group of houses. It was a small community built around the radio station.

The Abandonment

Radio technology changed over the years. Shortwave radio became less important as other ways of broadcasting became available. The radio service from São Gabriel was suspended on 1 June 2011. The transmitter site was no longer needed in the same way. The village soon lost its reason to exist.

The houses had no new use. Nature started to take over the streets and gardens. The school closed, and the church was left empty. Later, vandalism caused more damage.

What You See Today

São Gabriel now looks like a ghost village. The 22 houses still stand, but they are empty and slowly falling apart. The old school is also abandoned. The church remains one of the most interesting buildings in the village. Empty rooms, broken windows, and plants growing around the buildings create a strong feeling of decay.

Across the road, the old radio station once covered a large area. Its towers and antennas connected this quiet place with listeners around the world.

Exploring São Gabriel

São Gabriel is special because its history is easy to see. The houses were made for real families, while the school and church served the whole community. The village shows how quickly a place can change when its main purpose disappears. Today, it is a quiet reminder of Portugal’s old radio history.
