Metsamor Sports Complex
Metsamor Sports Complex is one of the most impressive Soviet-era buildings in Armenia. The huge complex was built for the workers of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant and their families. Today, parts of the building still serve local athletes, while other parts stand empty and slowly decay.
The city of Metsamor was built in the 1970s as a purpose-built town for employees of the nuclear power plant. The government planned many modern facilities for the growing population.
One of the most ambitious projects was the Metsamor Sports Complex. Architects Spartak Mikayelyan and Avetik Mirijanyan designed the building, and construction lasted from 1975 until 1986. The sports complex was planned as the largest facility of its kind in the region. It included indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sports halls, a gym, and a basketball court. The building became a symbol of the modern Soviet city that planners hoped Metsamor would become.
Its most striking feature is the group of three pyramid-shaped structures with long ribbon windows. These bold forms make the complex one of the best examples of Soviet Brutalist architecture in Armenia.
The Changing Fortunes of Metsamor
The future of the city changed after the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake. Authorities shut down the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in 1989 because of safety concerns.
Without the plant, many development projects stopped. The town’s growth came to an end, and several planned buildings were never completed.
Armenia then faced a severe energy crisis in the early 1990s. As a result, the government restarted the nuclear power plant. Life returned to Metsamor, but funding for large public buildings remained limited. The sports complex survived, but it never received the major investments it needed.
What You See Today
Today, the Metsamor Sports Complex is both active and abandoned. Some areas still host sports activities. Since 2008, the municipality has operated the Metsamor Sports School inside the building. Young athletes train in football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, weightlifting, kick-boxing, karate, and athletics.
Other parts tell a different story. Broken windows, peeling paint, and neglected swimming pools show decades of decline. The complex has never undergone a full renovation since it opened in 1986.

Few places show the dreams of the Soviet era as clearly as the Metsamor Sports Complex. The enormous halls, dramatic pyramids, and aging pools reveal a time when planners expected the city to keep growing. It remains one of the most remarkable abandoned places in Armenia.
