Kläranlage Scheufelen
Kläranlage Scheufelen is the abandoned in-house wastewater treatment plant of the former Papierfabrik Scheufelen in Lenningen, Germany. It once cleaned all process water from the paper factory that covered no less than 2 square kilometers. Today, the silent basins and concrete tanks tell a story of industry, control, and slow decay.
Papierfabrik Scheufelen was one of the most important paper producers in the region. Paper production uses large amounts of water, so the factory could not rely on public infrastructure. It built its own wastewater treatment plant on the site.
The wastewater treatment plant opened in 1958 with a mechanical and chemical system designed to clean process water from the paper factory. The Kläranlage Scheufelen had a purification capacity large enough for a city of around 20,000 inhabitants. That alone shows the scale of the factory. In 1974, the operators expanded the installation by adding a full biological treatment stage, which significantly improved water purification. A final major investment followed in 1989, when the plant was upgraded to meet the highest technical environmental protection standards of that period.
How the Plant Worked
The Kläranlage Scheufelen was a three-stage wastewater treatment plant. First came mechanical treatment. Screens and settling basins removed sand, fibers, and other undissolved materials from the water. Next was biological treatment. Bacteria broke down dissolved pollution. Oxygen was added to support this process. Organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus were reduced step by step. Before discharge, the water passed through a final filtration stage or polishing pond. This last step trapped fine suspended solids before the water returned to nature.
Abandonment and Silence
When Papierfabrik Scheufelen shut down, the Kläranlage Scheufelen lost its function. Pumps stopped. Basins dried out. No new use followed. Nature slowly moved in. Moss grows on concrete edges. Rust eats into railings and pipes. The place became quiet and forgotten.
Kläranlage Scheufelen is a technical ruin but also a reminder. Even hidden infrastructure leaves deep marks on the landscape.
