Igreja de São Bento de Ana Loura
The Igreja de São Bento de Ana Loura stands in a small village in Portugal. This old rural church has a history that goes back at least to the 16th century. Today, the quiet building and its empty surroundings show how much the village has changed.
- Built: 1534-1800
- Abandoned: 2000
- Status: Endangered
- Visited: 2023
The exact date when the church was built is unknown. However, records from 1534 already mention the church and its priest. This makes it one of the old religious buildings in the area.
The church was changed several times over the centuries. Major changes started in the 17th century and continued during the following two centuries. As a result, the building now combines parts from different periods.
The main chapel may still keep its early 16th-century structure. It was later enlarged to give more space to the people attending church.
A Simple Rural Church
The Igreja de São Bento de Ana Loura has a simple rural design. The church fits well with the traditional buildings of the Alentejo countryside.
The front has a triangular gable and a small bell tower. A marble doorway forms the main entrance. On the eastern side, you can also find an interesting marble sundial. It dates from the late 18th century.
Inside, the church is also simple. Rural churches in the Estremoz area often had little decoration. This church follows the same style, although some parts once had more decoration.
A Village in Decline
São Bento de Ana Loura has become a very small settlement. The population fell strongly during the 20th century. In 1950, the former parish had 502 inhabitants. By 2011, only 32 people remained.
The decline was caused by migration and the movement of people towards larger towns. The church is a reminder of the time when the village had a larger community.
