Eisenbahnkraftwerk Engelsdorf
The Eisenbahnkraftwerk Engelsdorf is part of the former railway repair works in Leipzig. This huge industrial site once kept Germany’s railways running. Today, many of its old buildings stand empty and slowly fall into decay.

The Eisenbahnkraftwerk, or railway power plant, was built to supply electricity and steam to the large railway repair works that opened in 1905, after moving from central Leipzig. It powered the workshops where locomotives and railway wagons were repaired, making it an essential part of the complex.
Expansion
As the railway network expanded, the site also grew. A nearby housing estate was even built for railway workers. During the 1920s, the factory continued to expand. It became one of the most important railway repair centers in Germany. In April 1945, Allied bombing destroyed around 85% of the complex. Workers rebuilt the site soon after the Second World War.
During the DDR period, almost 4,000 people worked here. Steam locomotives were repaired until 1967. After that, the factory switched to building and repairing freight wagons, including tank cars and other specialized railway vehicles.
Decline and Abandonment
After German reunification, the railway industry changed quickly. Thousands of jobs disappeared, and the workshops became much smaller. Although new companies continued railway maintenance on part of the site, large sections closed and were left behind. The power station was no longer needed. Many historic buildings, including the old power plant, became abandoned.
Today, the Eisenbahnkraftwerk Engelsdorf is a mix of active industry and abandoned buildings. In 2023, part of the complex hosted the famous IBUG urban art festival, where artists from around the world transformed several abandoned buildings with large murals and installations.
